The Deep tells the story of the incredible survival of an Icelandic fisherman named Guðlaugur Friðþórsson. He was aboard a boat with four colleagues when it capsized tipping them all into water that was only 5 degrees celsius. Guðlaugur swam for six hours in this freezing water before managing to drag himself ashore. However, his ordeal did not end there. He was washed up at a place where newly formed lava spills into the sea and had to walk across an area of rough lava in order to reach the nearest town.
